ECPR’s Wonderful, Adoptable Kitties!

We are just so excited about our merge with Kitty Harbor, and we can’t wait to open Emerald City Kitty Harbor!

While the Kitty Harbor facility is being renovated, we have some WONDERFUL kitties here at our main facility on 1st and Hanford in Sodo waiting to find loving homes!

b1How cute is Blackberry??! Blackberry spent the first 13 years of her life in a warm home, though found her way to our rescue when her owner could no longer look after her. This lively, active girl loves to play with toys when she’s not stretching out near a window and enjoying the sunshine! Blackberry used to live with other cats. yet would prefer to be the only cat in her future forever home. She loves to receive affectionate attention without any other competition. While she starts out shy, it isn’t long before she’ll be leaning into your hand while you stroke her fuzzy cheeks – but you’ll know you’ve sealed the deal with her when she rolls onto her back to offer her belly up for rubs! A girl of few words, Blackberry is extremely sweet and prefers the mellow life in her golden years, so a home with people over 16 years old is on her wish list. In exchange for a quiet, loving, forever home, Blackberry will give you companionship and devotion for years to come…!

h Little Harley is such a charmer! At 6 months old, Harley is barely out of babyhood and is excited to get the search underway for his new forever home. This vet staff favorite gets along well with other cats and dogs, so he would do well with other furry friends in the home. Harley loves to play and loves attention so a person who loves to play hard or has plenty of time to spare is ideal for him. Although he is affectionate, Harley isn’t the cuddliest little guy in the world and is likely to wiggle free so that he can get started on his next adventure! Fans of spunky, friendly little guys who come dressed in their own formal wear (he is a “tuxedo” breed after all) are sure to be big fans of Harley!

Meet Keva and Sativa, two of our new rescue arrivals! Their devoted mama has fallen on hard times and is trying to secure a forever home for her two girls. This bonded pair of 7 year-olds has been through quite a lot of change in the last several months and lean on each other for comfort. What Keva and Sativa want more than anything is safety and stability so they can begin their new lives together. Shy and scared at first meeting, these kitties would prefer a quiet home without any dogs or young children, but welcome adults who can show them the patience they need to come out of their shells. Once they are comfortable with you, these girls love receiving affection, attention, and being brushed while sitting on your lap! Emerald City Pet Rescue is a firm believer in second chances, and we can’t think of a pair more deserving than Keva and Sativa!

mMeet Maddie, one of our new rescue arrivals! This sweet, beautiful little domestic short hair girl is looking forward to finding her forever home in the Seattle area. Maddie is a classic wallflower, just like the pretty girl at school waiting on the sidelines for you to ask her to dance. Once you take a chance on her with a smooth, patient, gentle approach, you will find her apprehension melting away to reveal a sweet, affectionate side. Not one for playing so much as snuggling, Maddie does fine with other respectful cats, but would prefer a home with kids 12 and up because she isn’t such a fan of excitement or adventure. If a quiet, easygoing, and lovable is what you’re looking for all wrapped up in a petite package that loves to purr, look no further than Maddie!

mi Meet Minou! This tiny little 3-month-old girl is looking for her forever home in the Seattle area. Petite and sweet Minou may be small in stature but she is big in heart, with lots of love to share for just the right person (or people)! While a lot of kittens are courageous, risk-taking little daredevils, Minou is very mature for her age and is a bit more cautious with new people and situations. One of Minou’s favorite things to do is to play with other kittens, which is a great way of helping to build Minou’s confidence (and also to help burn that kitten energy). Minou would love most to find a home where she won’t be lonely and by herself too much, so another kitty companion or someone who is home frequently would be ideal for her (or why not both?). If shy, sweet and beautiful are what you’re seeking in a kitten, Miss Minou may be your match!

ALL of our adoptable kitties are fully vetted, spayed / neutered, and microchipped. If you’d like to meet any of these fuzzy felines, give us a call at 206 557 4661!

The Wheelies Whirl Toward Adventure

Right now at Emerald City Pet Rescue, we have three dogs with sweet sets of wheels. These dogs are:

Chewey the charmer!….

…Mommas the love bug!….

20161227_121214

…and Walter the sweet mischief maker!

20161227_120946

Chewey, Mommas and Walter all suffered injuries prior to arriving to ECPR which left their back legs paralyzed. At one point in their life, they could frolic and play the way most dogs do, so the loss of their mobility must have been a shock and heartache for them. But these three little wheelies are resilient, strong and full of joy despite their injuries. They don’t let their lack of normal mobility get in their way of exploring the world. Just yesterday, the three buddies went on a walk together. They had the grandest time!

Although Chewey may not be able to mark the way most dogs do (our wheelie dogs need help with bladder expressions), Chewey is still quite interested in smelling trees. He is probably thinking, “Someday, when I learn to walk again, I’ll come back to this very spot and mark this tree as mine!”

Chewey’s dream is not all that farfetched. Mommas, Chewey and Walter all get daily physical therapy. Before Walter arrived at the ECPR facility, the vet clinic he stayed with helped him make amazing progress with walking. He now takes steps on his own and is well on his way to walking again. Chewey has been getting physical therapy since arriving and he has also made impressive progress. He also has taken steps on his own and is learning to walk again! Mommas hasn’t had quite the same success with walking. She still gets daily physical therapy which her doctor says is a help to her regardless if she learns to walk again because it will help her muscles not atrophy. Mommas may not be achieving the same success with walking, but she has lots of success with being lovable and wonderful.

During their walk, the three pals ran into another pal! Fellow ECPR dog Echo who was on his own walk. The friends converged and the sniffing and tail wagging commenced!

After Chewey, Mommas and Walter’s meeting with Echo, more excitement rolled their way! The three wheeled friends politely stepped aside as another set of wheels passed by. They looked at the strange contraption curiously, comparing their own set of wheels to that of the smiling stranger’s.

The air was crisp but the sun was shining for their walk. The three dogs loved the feel of the sun warming their fur. It gave them each an extra jaunty skip to their step.

Mommas and Chewey have been at the rescue longer than Walter. Mommas and Chewey immediately gravitated toward each other and are great friends. They love to share a pillow or a sunspot in the playroom. They have their own cool kid clique that few can penetrate. But Walter, with his sweet, goofy joy, is winning over the two friends and fitting right into their crew.

It is more difficult for special needs dogs to find their forever home. But all three of these dogs are so lovable and so inspiring. They have wonderful and unique personalities. The ECPR crew has no doubt they will charm their way into a forever home soon. Right now they are wheeling their way toward adventures such as sunny day walks. But their greatest adventure has yet to come…the adventure of forever in their forever home!

ECPR’s Winter Adoption Event

Last Saturday, December 3, 2016, we here at ECPR held our second annual winter adoption event! Special thanks to Mudbay Uptown in Queen Anne for hosting, they have a WONDERFUL adoption center in their store and their staff is so kind and accommodating!

A few ECPR employees, a handful of our amazing volunteers, and a group of dogs ventured into the chilly unknown on this hopeful day. A supportive volunteer supplied us with plenty of coffee to lift our spirits and our energy, and as we readied some kennels for the dogs, we were sure to give them lots of pep talks! “This is an important day for you! Remember to smile, stick your tongue out a lot, and be your best selves! If you meet the perfect family for you, be sure to let them, and us, know!” The positive energy proved to be contagious and soon tails began to wag and little snouts began to smile.

At 11AM, prospective adopters began to venture toward the adoption center wondering if the perfect addition to their family was just a kennel away. The pups kept true to their word and charmed everyone they met with kisses, cuddles, wagging tails and cute little toothy grins. They spent more time in warm human arms than they did in their kennels, and by the end of the day, lots of people were entranced by their amazing sweetness!

As our facility is not a walk-through shelter (our pets spend their days in a playroom rather than in kennels) these off-site adoption events are such a fun and positive way to introduce them to prospective adopters who got to spend that special one-on-one time meeting them up close and seeing if there is a potential bond in their future. We were so thankful for the opportunity to watch our dogs fall in love with so many people, and to watch so many people falling in love with them! We are confident that in no time at all, the pups that attended this adoption event will find their perfect forever homes in no time at all.

Special thanks to Mudbay Uptown for providing both the space, and the help. They are amazing!

Special thanks also to our wonderful ECPR VOLUNTEERS! So many of you came to offer your support and assistance, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Lastly, special thanks to Erin Lynch whose wonderful photography skills really captured the spirits of our pets so well! Her pictures are below, and she is available to do photo sessions with you and your pet for the holidays!

Gidget : Very Special Dog Seeks Compassionate, Loving Family!

There are many important factors to consider when you make the decision to adopt a pet and bring them into your family. What kind of lifestyle do you have? Do you have children? Other pets? Do you travel a lot and would you want to take your pet with you if you do? Have you had dogs before, or cats, or critters? How comfortable are you with training? Are you and willing to adopt an animal with separation anxiety, fear-based aggression, food aggression? Are you willing to adopt a very shy pet who takes a while to warm up to new people?

At Emerald City Pet Rescue, we work individually with every potential adopter to try and make sure that the pet they end up adopting is a good fit for their family and lifestyle.

Sometimes, we rescue very special pets whose difficult pasts have left them with emotional scarring. These pets often take longer to place because we have to find the best fit that we can for them so that they can thrive, their new family can thrive, and everyone can remain safe and happy. If a pet is at ECPR for only a few days before they find their forever homes that’s wonderful, but if it takes weeks, months or even years, we will never give up because we know that every single pet has a perfect family out there just waiting for the stars to align so they can meet. Our pets spend their days out in playrooms with staff, trainers and other dogs so that we are able to give them lots of socialization and positive reinforcement on a daily basis.

Some of our long-term residents have unique personalities, but no matter what their challenges are, all of us here see so much potential in their sweet, hopeful eyes. Recently, two girls that we had in our system for quite some time, Fiona and Darla, found their forever homes and to say that the staff here at ECPR was happy for them is a gross understatement. There is nothing quite like the moment when someone looks at a pet and says, “I will love you unconditionally for everything that you are, and I will help you find all of the confidence and happiness that you deserve and more.”

gidget2Here is one of our long-term residents, Gidget. She has been in our system almost since we began (nearly three years) and we know in our hopeful hearts that it’s her turn to find her happy ending! This little brussels griffon mix has big, expressive ears, and the cutest little underbite that I’ve ever seen. Gidget can be wary and fearful of strangers, but she is making great strides at finding her confidence with people. Once she trusts you, she follows you around like a little shadow and wants nothing more than to be in your arms. Gidget is especially fearful of men, and we are working on helping her realize that ALL people have the potential to be her best friend.

Gidget recently went into a foster home with an amazing foster parent who has limitless compassion and patience. She has helped many of our other fearful dogs find their confidence and eventually their forever homes! We already miss Gidget here at our facility, but we know she is in great hands. We know every single day that passes brings Gidget one day closer to finding that forever home she deserves, and we will do anything we can to help her along the way. What Gidget needs most is someone with a compassionate heart who understands that this little girl’s behavior says, “You have to work to earn my trust and affection because I am so amazing that I can’t give it away to just ANYONE!” She wants a forever family just as amazing as she is, and we don’t blame her!

It’s easy to find a pet who will run to your arms within the first moment of meeting them, but to earn an amimal’s trust is one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced. The love and appreciation they show you is unconditional and pure; it will always put a smile on your face even on days when life is a little bit gray.

Who knows, maybe someone reading this right now has been looking for that perfectly unique little baby to love and cherish. If Gidget’s cute little face, silly tongue, big ears and sweet, expressive eyes are pulling at your heartstrings, please give us a call at 206 557 4661.

DailyECPR : Beautiful Bettina

Adopt Me1.jpg Do you love huskies? Do you love boxers? You can have the best of both worlds – a husky / boxer mix! Beautiful Bettina has amazing eyes, a licky tongue, and a very exciting personality! Like a lot of huskies, Bettina is highly intelligent so she is hoping to find an adopter who can really work to keep her stimulated both physically and intellectually. One of our employees loves to call her “smart but naughty!” Bettina is currently being boarded in a wonderful place where she has lots of room to run around – but she does like to rile up the other dogs! (Naughty, naughty!)

adopt-meOnce this gorgeous gal gets a chance to run around and exhaust some of that high energy, Bettina is all about getting loved on! She loves being pet, and a nice brushing is always greeted with a wagging tail as well because she definitely has that husky coat!

Bettina’s main challenge is that she’s not too fond of other dogs but proper and consistent training will go a long way in helping her with her reactivity. Her ideal family would consider her their one and only (she wants to be spoiled!), have a very secure yard, older children only, and the willingness to further her training and help her be the best possible dog she can be! We may be a little bit bias, but we are convinced that her potential is infinite!

If you think your home might be the perfect match for Beautiful Bettina, give us a call at 206 557 4661!

DailyECPR : ZORRO the Wonder-Cat!

zorro1Meet the distinguished Mister Zorro! Zorro is a dashing twelve-year-old kitty who boasts a cute moo-cow pattern and a little goatee! This sweet gentleman exudes a sense of confidence and calm — no midnight zoomies for this seasoned guy! Nothing seems to phase him, and within a few hours of being in new surroundings, you might think he had been there his whole life! His favorite things to do are to give little kitty licks to his people and curl up on your lap. Zorro is also great with cats and dogs!

zorro2Zorro has diabetes, but don’t let that discourage you; he takes his insulin like a pro, and he even seems to recognize when it is time for it. He might be considered special needs, but he doesn’t think so. If you asked him, he would just leave it at he is special!
He would make the most wonderful kitty for virtually any home, his demeanor is quiet, calm, tolerant, and go-with-the-flow! If you’re looking for a fantastic cuddly new friend, Zorro is DEFINITELY your super-kitty!

Zorro is neutered, fully vetted, and microchipped. Call Emerald City Pet Rescue at 206-557-4661 to set up a time to come in and meet him!

Chewie and Mommas are Besties!

CM1.jpg

The “Cutest BFFs in the Playroom” award goes to….

ECPR’s Chewey and Mommas! They love to hang out with each other, they think all of these other dogs with their four working legs and lack of wheels are just plain odd. They are in their own little wheelie club together where they joyfully roll around, or, more often, joyfully relax together while they wait to find their forever homes!

cm2Chewey is a handsome 4-year old Chihuahua mix. After receiving surgery for a ruptured disc, Chewey has been using a wheelchair, but he doesn’t let that slow him down for a second as he makes the rounds visiting his favorite people! And c’mon, who doesn’t love a guy with his own set of wheels? He is charismatic, friendly, and very sweet but he does not get along so well with cats.

Meet Mommas! 4-year old Mommas is a fantastic dog that loves people and other dogs. Mommas has lived with children – and loved them, too! Mommas is looking for a loving home that can offer her stability and support as she adjusts to her new life on wheels. As with most dogs that lose their ability to use their back end, this is not slowing her down! Mommas still has a happy-go-lucky attitude and she is always eager for new adventures. Mommas will need an adopter who is willing and able to work with her special needs. Mommas likes cats too!

If you might have the perfect home for one of these two special babies, give us a call at 206 557 4661!
