November Pets of the Month

We have many wonderful pets available for adoption here at Emerald City Pet Rescue! We have large, active dogs eager to find families to take them on lots of hikes and runs, we have small, senior dogs looking for a couch to snuggle up on, we have mischevious kittens, and older, refined cats for the more mellow household. We even have bunnies, and sometimes guinea pigs for the small pet enthusiasts!

Sometimes, some of these wonderful pets end up staying with us for a while as we work toward finding their families, and they need a little extra boost out here in the digital world. Each month, we pick a special dog, cat, and critter (if they are available for adoption at the time) to highlight as our Pets of the Month! If you are not in a position to adopt or foster, we encourage you to share these pets with your friends and family. You never know when the right match will find them!

Geoffrey.jpgMeet Geoffrey! Six-year-old Geoffrey, a Shephard/Lab mix,  is a ball-fetching, people-cuddling boy who loves treats so much he’ll even sit for them on command. Good with dogs and people who love tossing toys and outdoor adventures, Geoffrey would benefit from a family that likes to play as much as he does. If your idea of a perfect day is a romp in the park and a snuggle on the sofa, your perfect dog may be Geoffrey!

Geoffrey is good with other pups and dog-savvy older kids but needs a cat-free and critter-free home. Geoffrey is fully vetted and microchipped.

Please call 206-557-4661 for more information on Geoffrey!

Tiki.jpgWe’re in love with Tiki! She’s an eight-year-old Siamese (if you please!) who will quickly steal your heart! One look into Tiki’s big blue eyes and you can tell she has seen many things in her life! This sweet and wise lady is very gentle and always up for human love. It’s not uncommon to see staff and volunteers ooing and ahhing over Tiki while she soaks up the attention. Tiki enjoys roaming around our cat room and seeks out bits of sunshine to warm her fur. If you’re looking for a couch companion to cuddle and adore, then Tiki may be your gal!

Tiki is microchipped and fully vetted.

Some of our felines are offsite or in foster, so if you are interested in meeting them, please call Emerald City Pet Rescue at 206-557-4661.

Yogi Berra Wants To Play a LOT of Fetch!

Y3 2.jpgAll of the animals here at Emerald City Pet Rescue are special, but Yogi Berra has really impressed us all. This sweet boy came to us with extreme anxiety, allergies, and a lot of fear. Being in a busy environment with a lot of other rescue dogs helps a lot of dogs come out of their shell, but the environment wasn’t ideal for Yogi so one of our amazing Animal Care Specialists took him home to foster. It was there in foster that Yogi really blossomed! He settled into the routine at his foster home, got along with the other dogs there, and with the added benefit of a stable home-environment, Yogi learned to trust and be brave. We were all so excited when he recently reached enough confidence to be ready for adoption!Y2 2.jpg

We don’t just rescue animals here at ECPR; we give them our love and complete devotion. It can be heartbreaking when an animal comes to us fearful and unsure, but the resiliency of animals to overcome their pasts always continues to amaze us. Yogi came to us crying, and now he greets us with a wag in his tail and his goofy tongue hanging out of his mouth! Special thanks to miracle worker Julie who devoted herself to him so patiently in foster. Because of her, Yogi now sees humans as safe, loving, and treat-giving!

Yogi is a smart guy who excels at learning commands. Not only has he mastered “sit” and “down”, but he also knows “give paw” and “ball!” Did we mention how much Yogi LOVES his ball?! REALLY loves it. Carries it around in his mouth like it’s his baby. It’s the cutest thing ever!

Although Yogi has come a very long way, he will need a forever home that can continue to be patient with him and provide him with ongoing positive-based training. He would thrive best in a cat-free, child-free home. Although he gets along with other dogs, he doesn’t like every dog so a home with other dogs will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you’re a compassionate person who can’t resist a cute, goofy face, big clumsy dog hugs, and endless games of fetch, Yogi may be the guy you’ve been looking for!

If you’d like to meet Yogi and you live in or near the Seattle area, give us a call at 206-557-4661

Chewie and Mommas are Besties!

CM1.jpg

The “Cutest BFFs in the Playroom” award goes to….

ECPR’s Chewey and Mommas! They love to hang out with each other, they think all of these other dogs with their four working legs and lack of wheels are just plain odd. They are in their own little wheelie club together where they joyfully roll around, or, more often, joyfully relax together while they wait to find their forever homes!

cm2Chewey is a handsome 4-year old Chihuahua mix. After receiving surgery for a ruptured disc, Chewey has been using a wheelchair, but he doesn’t let that slow him down for a second as he makes the rounds visiting his favorite people! And c’mon, who doesn’t love a guy with his own set of wheels? He is charismatic, friendly, and very sweet but he does not get along so well with cats.

Meet Mommas! 4-year old Mommas is a fantastic dog that loves people and other dogs. Mommas has lived with children – and loved them, too! Mommas is looking for a loving home that can offer her stability and support as she adjusts to her new life on wheels. As with most dogs that lose their ability to use their back end, this is not slowing her down! Mommas still has a happy-go-lucky attitude and she is always eager for new adventures. Mommas will need an adopter who is willing and able to work with her special needs. Mommas likes cats too!

If you might have the perfect home for one of these two special babies, give us a call at 206 557 4661!

Mischevious Thelma Wants a Home!

thelma1Meet Thelma, a VERY SPECIAL dog who came to us from SOI dogs all the way from Thailand!

Thelma is a ridiculous, goofy, ball of sillyness. She is an explorer and loves to sniff around in the woods. She has a fair amount of energy and she is always smiling. She is an accomplished climber and she is smart enough to open doors of varying styles. She has prey drive towards cats, but also does well with small dogs. She is incredibly playful with other dogs, but sometimes her excitement gets the best of her- she comes on very strong. She has alright leash walking skills and she is a fast learner. The leadership program is really starting to show results with her, she is learning to sit for pets instead of head butting you. She would be a good dog for kids with her happy, playful attitude.

thelma2Thelma is truly wonderful she but does require a very experienced new family due to her high intelligence and her past as a savvy street dog.

If you are in the Seattle area and you think you may have the confidence and willingness to make this wonderful girl a part of your family, give us a call at 206 557 4661

DailyECPR : We Love Lincoln!

Lincoln2.jpgWe are pleased to introduce you to….. Lincoln!

Five-Year-Old Lincoln came all the way from Soi Dogs in Thailand to join the ECPR Family! Cuddly, friendly Lincoln has quickly become a staff favorite. Lincoln is a sweet, well-socialized fella, who makes the funniest noises when he’s trying to communicate with you.

Lincoln is very treat-motivated and learns quickly. He is very good at communicating with other dogs, though he can be impatient with them from time to time so Lincoln would prefer a home with either senior or mellow dogs (or, ideally, the only dog in the home so as to have the spotlight all to himself!) Lincoln is looking for an active family that will take him on daily hikes and adventures where he can show off his amazing walking skills! Lincoln needs a cat-free home, and because he can be vocal, apartments and condos are not for him, either. Because of his past, Lincoln would do best in a home with a fenced yard to prevent him from escaping, he needs to be 100% leashed.

LincolnLincoln would prefer a home with people 12 years old and older. A lot of training will be required for Lincoln, so experienced adopters who can provide him with these opportunities are ideal for him. Are you the right match for this international super-dog? Give us a call at 206 557 4661

Lincoln is fully vetted, neutered, and microchipped.

DailyECPR : Iggie is ig-tastic!

Iggie.jpg

Meet Mr. Iggie, the ig-tastic chi-pom!!!

This 11-year-old Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix has made the trek from California in search for his forever digs in the Seattle area. Iggie weighs about 4 pounds; yes, 4 pounds! He is an adorable little man with an easy-going demeanor and a sweet personality. He adores people and enjoys happily trotting around for his afternoon walk. When he’s not sleeping (which is most of the time), this cuddle bug is happily lazing on the lap of anyone who wants some Iggie love! Due to his tiny size and medical considerations (including cataracts), Iggie would do best in a home with no boisterous young children or energetic dogs who may not respect his space.

Iggie is currently in a foster home being a lap-tastic little mini. He is fully vetted, neutered and microchipped.

If you live in the Seattle area and would like to meet this cutie-pie, please give us a call at 206 557 4661

DailyECPR: Poncho and the Puppies on a Sunny Day

The animals at Emerald City Pet Rescue are enjoying their warm and glowing reward! After a seemingly infinite expanse of dark days, rainstorms and hardly a proper visit from the sun, spring is finally here! The animals have endured another gloomy winter, and their reward is sunshine, sunshine and more sunshine! Every dog has a different style of sunshine appreciation. Some of them like to plop down and thoroughly luxuriate. Others curl up with a dreamy expression on their face. Some like to stand and let the sunshine pour over them. Here are Gidget, Blade and Angelina, all enjoying some sunshine while they wait for their forever homes.

Sugar, who recently found her forever home with her sis and best bud Meili, is probably one of our most talented sunshine loungers ever. She turns enjoying sun into a display of true glamour. She tilts her head back dramatically while each and every part of her furry body soaks in the sun.

The best thing about the sunshine is the way it unifies the group. Even with our adorable crew of sweethearts, animosities and rivalries do develop. But who wants to engage in petty disagreements when instead you can share in the glory of sun!

But sunshine doesn’t just bring together foes, it further unites friends. The unifying force of sunshine is proven by Poncho and the puppies.

20160328_162131
Poncho is an amazing dog. He has an old soul and a young heart. He is a dog in his golden years with several years of life behind him. But he is ready and eager to appreciate all the days ahead of him. There is something truly special about older dogs. It is like dogs get kinder and even more amazing as they age. Stoic and sweet Poncho definitely is a (sun-)shinning example of an amazing older dog.

20160329_145951

But our elderly guy Poncho has that Puppy sparkle still gleaming brightly. He is curious and playful just like a little pup. So it is no surprise that Poncho befriended the puppies in the playroom. As soon as Poncho saw the puppies, he wanted to be their friend and to play with them. But playing is not as easy for Poncho as it is for other dogs. He doesn’t have the use of his back legs, and he must be in either a wheelchair or drag bag to navigate the world. So while other dogs may be able to romp around with their puppy friends, Poncho has a more difficult time. Even with the assistance of a drag bag or wheelchair, mobility is no easy feat.

But luckily, the puppies don’t need all their friends to be boisterous and quick with their movement. The puppies sensed a kindred spirit in Poncho, and they easily adapted their socializing style to fit Poncho’s more sedentary life. So instead of chasing and jumping, the puppies curled up next to their new pal Poncho on a big comfy dog bed and together they enjoyed a bit of sunshine.

Poncho is quite accustomed to sharing comfy beds with friends. When he arrived at the rescue, Poncho came with his long time best pal and bonded pair Viva.

20160329_084207

Viva, who is also a lovely elderly dog, is a wonderful girl with an endearing feisty side to her personality. She has lived long enough to know when to be patient and when it is time to turn on the sass. Along with her sassy side, she is incredibly sweet. She makes cute grunty sounds when she is happy. Whenever I give her head pets, she wiggles her head and nuzzles it toward my hand. She likes to spend her time daydreaming and cuddling with either a person friend or her best bud Poncho!

20160329_135727

Poncho and Viva and the puppies together show why dogs are so amazing at every stage of their life. Puppies are sweet and cute and playful, but as Poncho and Viva show, the puppy side of a dog never entirely leaves. Even the oldest dog has that burst of curiosity or playfulness or joy for life. With age, they grow into their giant paws and oversized ears, but they never grow out of what really made them amazing in the first place- the charm of the canine is ever enduring. The endearing nature, the sweetness and the lovability starts in puppyhood, but it is always there, especially in their golden years!
